Legendary American poet, musician and author, Gil Scott-Heron has been announced as the opening act at this year's Liverpool Sound City music festival.

The Godfather of hip hop, will play the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on 29 April, with tickets on sale 12pm Monday 15th March.

In 1971, Gil Scott-Heron laid down the blue print for the whole rap genre with the classic The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, and now as vital as ever, he returns with his new album, I'm New Here on XL Recordings and this rare Liverpool show. One of the most important figures in 20th Century music, his thoughtful, provocative and still rebellious voice is as vital as ever.

Support comes from John Head, founder and lead guitarist with cult Liverpool band, Shack.
